India Law Commission Regulated: Gambling Not Desirable, but Only Viable Option

Commission came to a conclusion that if a complete ban is impossible, although it is the best option, regulating gambling and betting would better fit to governmental policies’ effectiveness.

Some people even think that this move is unprecedented, while we all know that gambling is banned only in several states. Nevertheless, the Law Commission made has made a decision for the whole country, stating that India should legalize betting and gambling on the whole territory of the country, but regulate it strictly.

The report “Legal Framework: Gambling and Sports Betting Including Cricket in India” claims that today “the State authorities must ensure enforcement of a complete ban on unlawful betting and gambling.”

This document also says that failure of such enforcement of a ban on illegal gambling, might lead to increase of illegal gaming and circalation of black-money in the country. So, the Commission believes that regulation of this sphere will be a better practice than leaving gambling and betting as it is.

“Since it is not possible to prevent these activities completely, effectively regulating them remains the only viable option,” states the 145-page report, led by the former Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of Law Commission of India, B.S. Chauhan.
